One of the benefits offered to members of the club is instruction in the art of sailing. The sailing school recently enlarged its scope of operations offering the opportunity to the community including Narraguagus High school students. This has created beneficial publicity for the club but has caused some members to question whether benefits outweigh liabilities. The executive board welcomes this discussion and would like members to make their opinions known to any or all board members.
The board has been considering the possibility of operating the school as a separate entity on a non-profit basis. Vice Commodore Glenn Armstrong has been doing research and has concluded that non-profit status would encourage corporate and private gifts to support the school. A second benefit would be that separating the club from possible liability if someone is injured during instruction. More discussion is planned for the next board meeting and more details reported to club members before July's annual meeting.
