Sailing School NewsSailing

Summer 2002 was the first year the sailing school used six of the refurbished Dragonflies. It took some time getting used to the very responsive faster boats but the PMYC sailing students were very enthusiastic once they got their feet wet (some literally!). The school still has two Kingfishers, which serve as excellent beginner boats. Matt Nichols and Brady Fish both attended a grueling US Sailing sponsored school in Southwest Harbor and got their sailing instructor qualifications. Kudos to both of them. They both worked at the PMYC sailing school in 2002 and plan to be there this summer. Alan Krulisch gave instruction in racing strategy to the advanced class and conducted an exciting regatta series at the end of their week. For the first time awards were given. Take note of the date and time of this year’s scheduled sailing school regatta and come out and watch! Last year’s races were most exciting to witness.

The EdGE program received beginning sailing instruction from PMYC volunteers last summer as part of their camp program for 8th graders in Harrington and Addison. This program will be repeated this summer. EdGE pays the sailing school for this service and their students are insured under their own program umbrella. EdGE is a program administered by the Maine Seacoast Mission to give youngsters in Washington County educational and experiential opportunities.

Jack and Rosalind Ayers did the research and applied for a grant from the Maine Community Foundation to bring sailing instruction to the Narraguagus High School Physical Education Program. PMYC received the grant of $6100 that was used to purchase new sails where needed and other supplies to refurbish and outfit the remaining dragonflies. This summer all nine of the dragonflies are ready for use. (All labor on the dragonflies has been donated by club members.) Fall 2002 and Spring 2003, one week per season, introductory sailing instruction was given to Phys. Ed. Classes at NHS (a regional high school for Milbridge, Cherryfield, Harrington, Columbia, Columbia Falls and Addison). The school district (SAD 37) has budgeted $1600 for the 2003-2004 school year to repeat the two-week sailing program. NHS students are insured under the school’s policy while in the sailing program.

PMYC volunteer instructors were: Vicky Hampshire, Tim Moorhouse, Jack Ayers, Joanne Halpin, Will Halpin, Kathleen Hart, Alan Krulisch, Jamie Moorhouse, Joe LaTourneau, Jon Young, Matt Nichols, Don Hensler, George and Deb Arey. (Please forgive me if I’ve forgotten anyone! – Editor) Special thanks to those who have been working so hard and donating their time and talent on the Dragonflies for the past two winters bringing them back to life by patching, painting, refitting and rigging.

Note: The waterfront must be seen to be appreciated!! (Possibly the eighth wonder of the world or of Washington County) The Sailing School boats are on a raft attached to the pier. This impressive pier system has been cleverly engineered by George Arey and "his" volunteers creating access to navigable water at high or low tide.
