Petit Manan Yacht Club
2006 Tune-Up Race |
The Petit Manan Yacht Club (PMYC) will hold a practice and Tune-up Race (the Tune-up) on Sunday, July 16, 2006. The Tune-up will be sailed on Pleasant Bay and is open to club member owned or leased sailing vessels suitable to conditions that might be encountered in unprotected water. Any vessel competing in the race must be in compliance with U. S. Coast Guard requirements for a vessel of its size and equipped with a VHF radio capable of receiving weather broadcasts and VHF CH 68. The decision for any entrant to participate or not is solely that of the skipper.
All participating boats should rendezvous with the race committee at 1230 in the vicinity of Red Nun #2 at the entrance to the passage between Ripley Neck and Strout Island. There will be a series of three practice starts using the sequence described below beginning at about 1245. The starting line will be between a yellow flag flown from the committee boat and an orange drop mark. After clearing the starting line for a practice start each boat should return to the pre-start area to prepare for the next practice start sequence.
Following the starting practice, the Tune-up will be sailed over a windward/leeward course as shown on the diagram below. The starting line will be as indicated above. The windward mark will be a white drop mark and the leeward mark will be the orange drop mark used for the starting line. The finish line will be the same as the starting line. Government marks that are not marks of the course may be passed on either side at the discretion of the skipper. The race consists of two upwind and two downwind legs for a total of about 2.0 nm. All marks will be rounded to port. The Tune-up will start at approximately 1330. ALL PARTICIPATING BOATS WILL START AT THE SAME TIME. The starting sequence will be as follows:
5 Minute Warning - Horn
4 Minute Warning - Horn
3 Minute Warning - Horn
2 Minute Warning - Horn
1 Minute Warning - Horn
Start - Horn
(The race committee will announce the warning times
and signals over VHF Channel 68.)
For scoring the race, finish times will be corrected based on the each boat's PMYC assigned handicap. Time and conditions permitting, there will be a second Tune-up race over the same course, starting shortly after the last boat finishes the first race. The Racing Rules of Sailing (2005-2008) apply to all yachts while racing. All entrants will monitor VHF CH 68 from 1200, July 16, 2006 until they finish the last race.
Yachts will be assigned handicaps based on past performance in PMYC races and their yacht's characteristics. First time entrants must submit details on their yacht to the Tune-up Chairman, Alan Krulisch. All entrants must register with the Tune-up chairman no later than 1800, July 5, 2006. The event will be cancelled unless three or more boats register.
There will be a post Tune-up Race rendezvous in Otter Cove (NE corner of Dyer Island.) immediately following the last race to discuss and critique the starting practice and Tune-up Race. For more information and registration, contact Alan Krulisch.
